＜日本語/English＞ 英語文化学科の五條千春さんが「秋KESSA杯」英語弁論大会で3位に入賞しました。

A student from the Department of English Culture, Ms. Chiharu Gojo, finished third at an English speech contest.

「第6回 秋KESSA杯争奪 学生英語弁論大会」(関西英語会連盟主催)が11月7日、オンライン上で開催され、本学英語文化学科英語特別クラス(ACE)３年生の五條千春さんが3位に入賞しました＝写真＝。同大会は、関西地区の同連盟に加盟する大学の代表学生が、８分間の英語弁論と４分間の英語による質疑応答を競う大会です。今年度は、大阪府、京都府、兵庫県、岡山県の９大学から９名の学生が出場しました。

 

五條さんの演題は「Color Your Life with Flowers」(毎日に花の彩りを)。美しい花も、売れ残りや規格外になれば廃棄される。人々が日常的に花を購入することで、毎日の彩りと生花の廃棄問題を回避すべきと訴えました。「ゼミの教授や同期、先輩方から、発音、表情、ジェスチャーの改善点を細かくアドバイスいただきました。他の大会で予選通過できなかった悔しさをバネに、ここまで努力を続けて良かったです」と喜びを話しています。

指導にあたった英語文化学科・学科長の清水利宏教授(英語スピーチ・プレゼンテーション研究室)は、「身近な問題と誠実に向き合う姿勢が結果につながりました。関西の強豪校が揃う「秋KESSA杯」での入賞は、彼女にとって今後の研鑽への原動力となることでしょう」と話しています。

 

今回の受賞により、本学英語文化学科は、「エリザベス・ラッセル杯」(活水女子大学)、「福澤杯」(慶應義塾大学)に続く、この単年度で３大会連続の上位入賞を達成しています。

 

“The 6^th Autumn KESSA Cup – Student English Speech Contest” (Sponsored by the Kansai English Association) was held online on November 7^th. Ms. Gojo who belongs to the advanced English class ACE, is a third year student who participated in the speech contest that saw her in 3^rd place. The tournament is held by student representatives of universities that are members of the federation in the Kansai area. The competition consists of a speech in English under 8 minutes, followed by questions in English for a duration of 4 minutes.

 

Ms. Gojo’s speech “Color Your Life with Flowers” talks about even the most beautiful flowers could be thrown away if they are left unsold. She argued that by buying flowers on a daily basis can bring joy to our lives as well as preventing unnecessary disposal of flowers. Ms. Gojo commented, “I’d like to thank my professor and my peers for giving advice on the right pronunciation, how to have my facial expressions, and on my overall performance too. Although, I wasn’t able to deliver as well in other competitions, I’m proud that I carried on and kept at it as long as I have.”

 

The head of the Department of English Culture, Professor Shimizu also added “this outcome is the result of attitude towards hard work and her willingness of problem solving. Receiving an honor like the “Autumn KESSA Cup” that is known for its competitiveness among schools in Kansai, will be a driving force to Ms. Gojo for her future learning.”

 

Along with this particular award, the Department of English Culture at Mukogawa Women’s University has achieved top prizes in three consecutive tournaments in the single year.
