Canoe club members, Moe Kurihara, a student of MWU and a graduate Yukiko Nishibun both took part in World Masters Canoe Games 2021 Kansai championships as representatives of Japan. The grand event was held in Romania from September 30th to October 3rd. Please see below for their comments on their experiences.

Ms. Yukiko Nishibun

“It was the first time for me to have ever competed in a long distance race and it was harder than I’d ever imagined. Having said that, the spectators were so encouraging regardless of which country the team was from and they helped to create an uplifting atmosphere that also allowed me to show respect to the other competitors. I tasted what it was like to compete at the highest level, and was shown what it takes to be there. I will use this experience as a motivation to keep aiming high. Despite the restrictions still in place due to Covid-19, I was able to compete thanks to all the support from the university and everywhere else. I’m truly grateful.”

Ms. Moe Kurihara

“I was fortunate enough to take part in this event that was held in Pitesti, in Romania. Not only were the competitors there bigger in size but even the people as small as I am,  fought hard which only made me realize of how far I’ve got to go. Through this competition I came up close to world class athletes, experienced a different culture, and it made me grow as a competitor as well as person. I’m thankful to have been a part of it and will continue to do my best.”

Good luck in the future, ladies!
