＜日本語/English＞英語スピーチ/プレゼンテーション研究室が6年度連続全国大会上位入賞でトップレベルの実力を証明しました

The English speech / presentation lab proved its eminent ability by winning the top prize in the national competition for the 6^th consecutive year.

武庫川女子大学英語文化学科の英語スピーチ/プレゼンテーション研究室が6年度連続で全国大会上位入賞を続けています。今年度は日本三大大会の一角、福澤杯争奪全日本学生英語弁論大会で準優勝を果たし、全国トップレベルの実力を証明しました。

 

第9回エリザベス・ラッセル杯（活水女子大学）準優勝、第45回福澤杯（慶應義塾大学）準優勝、第6回秋KESSA杯（関西ESS連盟）3位、第54回谷本杯（関西外国語大学）準優勝、第15回森田杯・英文毎日杯（京都外国語大学）優勝――。2021年度10月以降、英語スピーチや英語プレゼンテーションの全国大会で、本学の学生が成し遂げた快挙の数々です。

 

快挙を遂げた学生の多くは、英語文化学科長である清水利宏教授（英語学）のゼミ「英語スピーチ・プレゼンテーション研究室」に所属しています。同研究室の指導学生が最初に頭角を現したのは、2016年度の香港杯全日本大学学生大使英語プログラム（香港特別行政区政府）。当時の4年生が準優勝しました。翌2017年度は同大会の全国ファイナルに本学の3人がそろって進み、本田諭美さん（当時3年）が優勝。本田さんは同じ年、青嵐杯（北九州市立大学）でも3位に入り、清水研究室の指導力に注目が集まりました。※香港杯は2018年度の3位入賞を最後にコンテスト自体が中止。

 

2018年度には当時の４年生ペアが森田杯・英文毎日杯（京都外国語大学）で準優勝。2019年度には当時の3年生が青嵐杯（北九州市立大学）優勝とみどり杯（龍谷大学）準優勝を果たしたほか、2020年度も当時の3年生が上智大学短期大学部学長杯（上智大学）で3位に入賞し、層の厚さと実力が知れ渡りました。そして2021年度、日本三大大会の一角である福澤杯(慶應義塾大学)で香川友里絵さん（3年）が準優勝まで上り詰めました。

 

学生の英語スピーチコンテストでは慶應義塾大学が主催する福澤杯と、早稲田大学の大隈杯、獨協大学の天野杯が日本三大大会と称され、レベルの高さで知られます。清水ゼミではこうした全国大会の上位をめざし、話す内容から発音、身振りまで、徹底的に鍛え上げます。学生は授業後の大教室や中庭で練習を重ね、互いに切磋琢磨しながら完成度を高めます。

 

「上位に食い込むには英語力だけでなく、何を話すか、どう話すかが重要。会場を巻き込む強いスピーチ、魅力あるプレゼンテーションがカギになります」と清水教授。自身もスピーチの達人で、数々のスピーチコンテストで審査員を務めています。小中高校生を対象に英語スピーチ活動の普及にも力を注ぎ、2020年度からは、高大連携教育プロジェクトとして全国を巡回し、英語スピーチの特別セミナーを開催する長期プロジェクト「Global Speakers Seminar 2020-2030」に取り組んでいます。

 

12月には、ゼミの現3、４年生と来年度から所属予定の2年生が一堂に会し、カップや賞状を手にした受賞者たちが、「受賞できたのはゼミの支えのおかげ。高い目標に挑戦し、いい思い出をつくってほしい」と、後輩たちを激励しました。

The English speech / presentation lab has been achieving victory at national competitions for the past 6 years. At one of the three major competitions in Japan, the Fukuzawa Cup was one that saw a student from Mukogawa Women’s University rise to a runner-up.

 

The list below are of the achievement of the students from October 2021 onwards;

• Runner-up at Elizabeth Russell Cup (Kwassui Women’s University)
• Runner-up at Fukuzawa Cup (Keio University)
• Runner-up at Autumn KESSA Cup (Kansai ESS Federation)
• 3^rd place at Tanimoto Cup (Kansai Gaidai)
• Runner-up at Morita Cup / English Mainichi Cup (Kyoto University of Foreign Studies)

 

Many of the students who had success in the contests belong to the seminar “English Speech Presentation Lab” which is ran by Professor Toshihiro Shimizu, the Dean of the Department of English Culture. The first student to have been accredited from the seminar was at the Hong Kong Cup in All Japan University Student Ambassador English Programe that saw the student get the second place. The following year, in 2017, three students advanced to the national finals of the tournament, and Satomi Honda, who was in her third year at the time won the championship. In the same year, Ms. Honda also ranked 3rdi the Seiran Cup. Since then, the attention was drawn to the teachings of Shimizu Lab.

 

The Fukuzawa Cup, sponsored by Keio University, the Okuma Cup of Waseda University, and the Amano Cup of Dokkyo University are called the three major competitions for university students doing speech contests and they are known for their high level of expectations. At the Shimizu seminar, students aim to enter such contests and are thoroughly trained in all aspects of speech giving, from pronunciation to gestures. The students practice in spacious rooms after class and work hard in encouraging each other.

 

“In order to get into the higher rankings, not only is the English ability desired but the content and how it is conveyed are key. It’s imperative to execute attention grabbing and captivating presentations.” says Professor Shimizu. He is an expert on the how to of speeches and has been a judge in numerous speech contests. A project “Global Speakers Seminar 2020 - 2030” is a nationwide educational project that gives elementary, junior and senior high school students that opportunity to be exposed to speech giving in English.

 

The students who have been honored for their achievements have gathered have stated “we’re here today hanks to all the support we were given at the seminar. We want you to aim high and make ever lasting memories.”
