Students taking the “Hanshinkan Cultural Theory” learned and practiced global discussion methods from former UN member of staff.

生活環境学科の「阪神間文化論」（三宅正弘准教授）は21日、世界各地でファシリテーターとして活躍する元国連職員・武谷圭祐先生をゲスト講師に迎え、甲子園会館で特別授業を行いました。

 

「阪神間文化論」は、かつて「阪神間モダニズム」と呼ばれ、昭和初期には日本を代表する文化の発信地だった阪神エリアの魅力の継承がテーマです。特別授業で、阪神間の魅力を再発見しようと、国際会議や国際的なワークショップの手法として注目されているオープン・スペース・テクノロジー（OST）の手法を取り入れ、六甲山や芦屋川、西宮浜の環境とデザインについて議論しました。甲子園会館の前身である甲子園ホテルは、まさに阪神間モダニズムを象徴する建造物です。

 

OSTとは、参加者が主体となって対話を進める手法で、参加者は輪になって議論を共有する一方、テーマごとに小さなグループでセッションを行い、自由にグループを移動します。授業は西ホールで感染対策を徹底して実施しました。学生からははじめ、なかなか意見が出ませんでしたが、一人一人が興味に応じてグループを移動するうち、議論が活発化しました。

 

２年の福岡彩純さんは「対話によって一人一人の個性が発揮され、多様な意見が聞けたことが驚きで楽しかった」。三宅教授は「教員側としてこちらから意見を聞くのでなく、学生から自然に意見が出るのを待つことで個性が引き出せることを学びました」と話しています。

 

 

On the 21^st of January, a class was held at Koshien Kaikan with former UN staff, KeisukeTakeya, who is active as a facilitator all over the world, as a guest lecturer. The students of the Department of Human Environmental Sciences were given a one-off lesson on “Hanshinkan Cultural Theory” along with associate Professor Masahiro Miyake.

 

“Hanshinkan Cultural Theory” was once called “Hanshinkan Modernism”, and its aim was to inherit the charm of Hanshin area, which was the origin of Japan’s representative culture in the early Showa period. Efforts to rediscover the charm of Hanshin by incorporating the method of Open Space Technology (OST), which is attracting attention in international conferences and workshops were introduced in the class. Followed by discussions of the environment and design of Mt. Rokko, Ashiya River, and Nishinomiyahama. The Koshien Hotel, the predecessor of the Koshien Kaikan, is a building that truly symbolizes Hanshinkan Modermism.

 

OST is a process in which participants take the initiative in promoting dialogue. Participants hold discussions sat in a circle, with variations in topics and are able to move freely in between groups. The class at West Hall was cautiously carried out with under- control to measures to prevention of the spread of infections.  In the beginning, the students were hesitant to speak up, but as the level of interaction rose, the discussions seem to have picked up.

 

Azumi Fukuoka, in the second year commented “it was surprising as well as fun to hear various opinions by demonstrating each one of our perspectives through the discussion.” Proffessor Miyake added “I was made aware of the fact that a teachers, we ought to provide students the freedom to express themselves in their own ways rather than ask that of them.”
