The serialization of the 100-year plan for the first issue of the magazine “New Architecture”.

雑誌『新建築』が2025年に創刊100周年を迎えるのを前に、本学建築学部景観建築学科の石田潤一郎教授と大阪市立大学の倉方俊輔教授が1920～30年代の関西モダニズム建築を紐解く連載がスタートしました。1月号から隔月で6回掲載予定。倉方教授は現在、クロスアポイントメントにより本学の生活環境学科に所属中で、本学に関わりのある建築史家二人が、日本を代表する建築雑誌の大型企画を1年にわたり、飾ることになります。1月中旬、石田教授に連載にかける思いなどを聞きました。

 

『新建築』創刊100年企画　関西モダニズム―住宅・建築・都市―。『新建築』が1925年に大阪で創刊されたことにちなみ1920年代～30年代の関西にフォーカスし、当時の大阪建築界の魅力を多方面から掘り下げます。創刊100年の2025年に大阪・関西万博が開催されることから、建築業界の活況が予想され、連載は大きな注目を集めそうです。

 

連載第１回のテーマは「武田五一と『新建築』」。同誌創刊に功績のあった建築家・武田五一を軸に、石田教授、倉方教授それぞれが寄稿。甲子園会館で行われた両氏の対談も掲載しています。対談の中で石田教授は「1925年は関西にとって時代の大きな変曲点。いろいろな出来事が個性的な建築表現の可能性を生んだ」、倉方教授は「世界における日本の近代化を再考しようとしたとき、関西という場所がそれにふさわしい」と、連載の意義について語り、大大阪時代を牽引した大阪経済、村野藤吾や安井武雄が輩出した建築界、御堂筋着工など行政のリーダーシップ等、多彩な視点を示しました。

 

2021年度から景観建築学科に着任した石田教授は、建築史の第一人者として知られ、戦前期の『新建築』が復刻された際、監修を務めたこともあります。1920年代という時代について、石田教授は「関西建築が一番元気だったころ。オーナー社長が才能ある建築家を取り立てるような、ビジネスに収まらない手法でダイナミックに建築界が動いていた面がありました。そうした中から新しい建築家が次々に現れ、『新建築』を舞台に育っていった」と概観。現代の建築が、効率や経済性を優先し、ともすれば画一的になっている現状に「今、関西の建築業界は好調ですが、建築としての手ごたえや魅力が増しているかどうか。過去に学び、問い直す必要があるでしょう」と、課題を提起しました。

 

連載は石田教授と倉方教授の原稿を同時掲載します。石田教授は大学時代の卒業研究のテーマが「武田五一」だったそうで、「以来、50年近く関西の建築史を手掛けてきた自分と、東京の建築界にも詳しい倉方先生の視点がうまくクロスオーバーして、関西モダニズムを多面的に描き出せれば」と、意気込みを語ります。連載で取り上げるテーマについて「阪神間で郊外型住宅が形成される中で、小住宅にも建築家が関わるなど変化が起きていった。今につながるこうした話題にも触れながら、大阪が都市的な変貌を遂げていく過程を描きたい。いずれ甲子園会館のことも書くつもりですので、楽しみにしてください」と話しています。

 

The series of the magazine will have two architectural historians related to Mukogawa Women’s University, including Professor Junichiro Ishida of the Department of Landscape of Architecture. To rejoice its 100^th anniversary in 2025 for the magazine “New Architecture”, Professor Junichiro Ishida, and Professor Shunsuke Kurakata of Osaka City University has started working on serialization on the Kansai modernist architecture of the 1920’s and 30’s.

 

The theme of the first serialization is “Goichi Takeda and New Architecture”. Contributed by Professor Ishida and Professor Kurakata, primarily centered on Goichi Takeda, an architect who was successful in launching the magazine. The dialogue between the two men held at the Koshien Kaikan is also recorded. In the discussion, Professor Ishida said, “1925 is a major inflection of the times for Kansai. Numerous events have created the possibility of exceptional architectural expression”, to which Professor Kurakata added, “When trying to reconsider the modernization of Japan in the world, a place like Kansai is suitable for it.” He spoke of the significance of the serialization, and showed various perspectives such as the Osaka economy that led the Great Osaka era, the architectural world produced by Togo Murano and Takeo Yasui.

 

Professor Ishida, who joined the Department of Landscape of Architecture in 2021, is known as a leading figure in the history of architecture, and also supervised when the prewar “New Architecture” was reprinted. Regarding to the architecture movement in the 1920’s, Professor Ishida stated “Back then, it was when architecture in Kansai was at its peak. There was an apect that the architectural world was shifting in a way that did not fit into the business format.”

 

The serialization will include the manuscripts of Professor Ishida and Profesor Kurakata will be posted at the same time.
